As district basketball season begins, Frisco Independent School District (FISD) girls teams are preparing for their first games of the year, scheduled to start this Friday. Anticipation is high among athletes and fans as teams look to build on last year’s successes.
Memorial High School enters the season as the defending District 11-5A champion, while Wakeland High School holds the title in District 12-5A. Panther Creek High School returns as the reigning champion of District 9-4A. According to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 5A state rankings, Wakeland is currently ranked eighth and Memorial is thirteenth.
Last season saw Memorial and Wakeland face off in the 5A Division II Region 2 final. Memorial won that game with a score of 41-36 and went on to reach the state semifinals. Seven FISD girls basketball teams advanced to the playoffs during that campaign.
“Hopefully just as much excitement, and maybe more,” according to information released by Frisco ISD Athletics.
For those interested in following the season, a day-by-day districtwide calendar of games can be found online along with individual team schedules through RankOne. Tickets for upcoming games are available at tickets.friscoisd.org.
District standings will be updated after each round of games, which typically take place on Tuesdays and Fridays.
