Rep. Keith Self, a U.S. Congressman who won re-election in both 2022 and 2024 against Sandeep Srivastava, has used his social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and rising national debt.
On October 3, 2025, Rep. Self cited Ernest Hemingway to underscore concerns about the federal deficit: “As Ernest Hemingway wrote in The Sun Also Rises, ‘How did you go bankrupt? Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly.’ The U.S. debt stands at $37 trillion, and is projected to hit $38 trillion in weeks and possibly $50 trillion within a decade. Congress must act now—demand fiscal”.
Later that same day, he addressed legislative efforts by House Republicans: “House Republicans passed a bill to keep the government funded. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats’ continued obstruction has forced the Speaker to designate next week as an in-district work period. Despite the Democrat Shutdown, my team and I will continue working for the good” (October 3, 2025).
The following morning, Rep. Self reiterated his position regarding responsibility for the shutdown: “It’s Day 4 of the Democrat Shutdown. @HouseGOP did our jobs to keep the government open and passed a clean CR. It’s time for Senate Democrats to do the same.” (October 4, 2025).
Rep. Keith Self’s comments come amid heightened partisanship over federal spending bills and government funding measures—a recurring issue in recent congressional sessions.
Self has represented his district after winning re-election against Sandeep Srivastava with 62.5% of votes in 2024 and with 60.5% in 2022.
