Panther Creek High School’s football team secured the 7-on-7 Division II state championship title in College Station. The team triumphed over Kilgore with a score of 32-26 in an overtime match, concluding the event undefeated. This format, similar to flag football, involves only pass plays where quarterbacks and receivers face off against defensive backs.
The decisive moment came when Panther Creek quarterback Graylyn Fry connected with receiver Jalen Lott for the winning touchdown. Despite not being affiliated with the University Interscholastic League (UIL), this competitive event draws teams from across Texas, who qualify through regional tournaments to compete at the state level.
“We think about 7-on-7 being a tool to help out in real football,” said Panther Creek football coach Clint Surratt to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. “Certainly happy they won one today, but the real goal is to win one in the fall.”
The regular fall football season is set to begin on the weekend of August 28.
