Congressman Keith Self has expressed concern over President Joe Biden's decision to authorize Ukraine's use of the long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) for strikes inside Russia. In a letter addressed to President Biden, Congressman Self criticized the move, highlighting that Congress has neither declared war against Russia nor passed an Authorization of Military Force.

Self emphasized that the authorization involves US weapons systems being used by a non-ally nation against a primary strategic adversary, which he believes endangers American citizens and could potentially invoke Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.

The congressman requested a classified briefing from the White House before November 25, 2024, to gain insight into the administration’s agreement on Ukraine’s rules of engagement concerning ATACMS. He warned that failure to provide this briefing would prompt him to seek further oversight.

“These are the most dangerous days America has faced since the Cuban Missile Crisis,” stated Congressman Keith Self. He added concerns about escalating conflict during this sensitive phase of the Ukraine situation and questioned whether political and military leaders fully understand its potential ramifications.

Self brings his experience from active duty during the Cold War when he was responsible for launching strategic nuclear weapons under orders from the National Command Authority.
