The McKinney ISD Board of Trustees held its monthly meeting on June 24, 2024. Board Secretary Harvey Oaxaca provided a summary of the key events and decisions.
The meeting commenced with celebrations and recognitions. The Educational Results Partnership named McKinney ISD to its annual "Honor Roll" list of top-performing school districts in Texas. Additionally, five schools within the district—Evans Middle School, Faubion Middle School, McGowen Elementary, Scott Johnson Middle School, and Slaughter Elementary—were recognized as "Honor Roll" schools. Approximately 12 percent of Texas schools made the Honor Roll this year.
McKinney ISD also received the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the eighth consecutive year.
Several new administrators were welcomed into their roles:
- Jae Gaskill as Director of Career and Technical Education
- Tawn King as Director of Human Resources
- Irma Garcia as Senior Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning
- Justin Penio as Principal of McKinney North High School
- Dr. David Hodum as Principal of McKinney Boyd High School
- Melissa Hernandez as Principal of Evans Middle School
- Inetra Nelson as Principal of Malvern Elementary
- Jennifer Larriviere as Principal of Minshew Elementary
Presentations followed these introductions. Sheila Due, CEO for the McKinney Education Foundation (MEF), discussed MEF's partnership with McKinney ISD to support students and families. Becky Jackson, Director of Data and Analytics, presented preliminary STAAR data for 2024.
Dr. Dennis Womack, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, addressed education finance issues, emphasizing that Texas public school funding is driven by student attendance rather than local property values. He also provided a budget update affecting the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
Chief Financial Officer Marlene Harbeson presented the recommended budget for 2024-2025 and conducted a tax rate public hearing.
Rusty May, Director of Safety and Security, recommended adopting the Evolv Security Detection System at various district locations including high schools and DAEP campus. This system aims to enhance safety protocols by detecting potential threats non-intrusively using advanced technology. The board approved this recommendation.
The Board re-elected Philip Hassler as President, Amy Dankel as Vice President, and Harvey Oaxaca as Secretary.
