The Wakeland volleyball team has advanced to the state semifinals for the first time, marking a significant achievement in their season. The team's progress to the 5A Division II state semifinals was particularly notable due to their victory over Lovejoy on Friday night. Lovejoy had only lost one playoff match since 2018 and was last year's winner of its tenth state title. Wakeland managed a three-set sweep with scores of 27-25, 25-21, and 25-22 at Hebron High School.
Wakeland is set to face Argyle on Tuesday, November 19, in a state semifinal at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. The match between Wakeland (33-6) and Argyle (39-5) will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the victor moving forward to compete in the 5A Division II title match on Saturday at the same venue.
In their match against Lovejoy, Wakeland came back from a 23-21 deficit to win the first set and then maintained control in the subsequent sets. They are currently the only team that has defeated Lovejoy in playoffs since 2018, having also done so during the regional semifinals in 2022. However, that year Wakeland was defeated by Reedy in the regional final; Reedy went on to become the runner-up for the state title. This year’s Reedy team was defeated by McKinney North on Friday in a 5A Division I regional final.
