The Wakeland volleyball team has secured a place in the UIL State Championship match after defeating top-ranked opponents. Ranked No. 3 in the state for 5A, Wakeland overcame both higher-ranked teams to reach this stage.
In their latest match, Wakeland triumphed over Argyle in a five-set encounter at Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. The victory was achieved with scores of 25-13, 20-25, 25-16, 28-30, and 15-12. This win advances Wakeland to its first-ever state championship match where they will face Cedar Park on Saturday at noon at the same venue.
Wakeland coach U’iLani Womble expressed her excitement about the win against Argyle, stating: “Amazing.” She noted the intense atmosphere as momentum shifted throughout the game until Hannah Lee secured the final point with a spike.
Reflecting on their journey, Womble told the Dallas Morning News: “When we start the season every year, this is our goal, to make it to the very last game, and we did it.” She emphasized their motto for leaving a legacy for their school and community.
This victory follows Wakeland's earlier three-set sweep against Lovejoy, last year's defending state champion. With this achievement, Wakeland becomes only the second Frisco ISD team to reach a state volleyball final since Reedy's runner-up finish in 2022.
A win on Saturday would mark Wakeland as the first Frisco ISD team to claim a state volleyball title.
Tickets are currently available for purchase for those wishing to attend the championship match.
