On December 6, 2024, Rep. Self expressed support for Southern Methodist University (SMU) and Army teams competing in their respective championships by tweeting: "Best of luck to SMU in the ACC Championship and Army in the AAC Championship this weekend! #PonyUp and #GoArmy! "

The following day, December 7, 2024, he commemorated Pearl Harbor Day with a tweet honoring those who sacrificed their lives during the attack on Pearl Harbor: "On December 7, 1941, America was attacked at Pearl Harbor, but our nation’s resolve never wavered. Later that same day, Rep. Self addressed a political matter involving Pete Hegseth's nomination as Secretary of Defense (SECDEF). He urged senators to consider Elon Musk's advice regarding Hegseth's qualifications: "Senators should heed the advice of Elon Musk, stop messing around and consent to Pete Hegseth’s nomination as SECDEF. Pete has degrees from Princeton and Harvard..."
