The American Red Cross is set to honor four employees from McKinney Parks and Recreation with the Lifesaving Award for First Responders. This accolade, recognized as the highest award by the Red Cross for saving or sustaining a life through skills acquired in a Red Cross Training Services course, will be presented at 10 a.m. on December 17 at the Senior Recreation Center located at 1400 S. College St.
The commendation follows an incident on June 27 when Lou Conner, a long-time member of the center, collapsed during an exercise class. The quick response was initiated by pool managers Savanah Chavarria and Jaden Dawes, who evaluated Conner's condition. Concurrently, Cianna Alliot, Aquatics Coordinator, and Griffin White, Aquatics Supervisor, performed CPR and used an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). They administered six rounds of CPR until emergency medical services from the McKinney Fire Department arrived.
Amy Kinkade, Director of Parks and Recreation, highlighted the importance of training in her statement: “We prioritize rigorous training to ensure our employees are prepared to respond in any situation. The life-saving actions of our team show the importance of that preparation and their dedication to the safety and well-being of our residents.”
Mayor George Fuller also praised their efforts: "The actions of these employees saved a life on June 27, and this recognition from the American Red Cross underscores their bravery and commitment to our community. We couldn’t be prouder of their efforts and the difference they made that day.”
