The McKinney National Airport has made a significant economic contribution of over $299 million annually to the City of McKinney and its surrounding region, as revealed by a study from InterVISTAS Consulting Inc. This marks a 41 percent increase compared to the previous assessment in 2018, which recorded an impact of $212.7 million. The recent analysis covered the fiscal year ending September 30, 2023.
Ken Carley, Director of the McKinney National Airport, emphasized the airport's role as an economic driver for the community: “This new economic impact study underscores what we’ve known for some time. McKinney National Airport is a vital economic engine for our community,” he said. He added that the airport’s expansion supports local employment and strengthens the city’s economy.
Key findings from the study include:
- Job Creation: The airport supports 1,560 jobs with wages totaling $110 million. Direct jobs at TKI offer salaries above both state and national averages.
- Economic Output: The airport contributes more than $299 million to the local economy.
- Tourism Impact: Visitors through TKI spend over $21.7 million locally and support 410 hospitality sector jobs.
- Capital Investment: With $19.2 million invested in capital improvements, TKI generated $38 million in economic output and supported 200 jobs.
In terms of job creation, McKinney National Airport directly employs 420 individuals with total wages reaching $43 million—averaging $103,400 per job—surpassing Texas's average wage of $65,400 and the national average of $68,500. Since the last report, direct employment has surged by 48 percent due to increased aviation traffic and business growth at TKI. Including indirect impacts, operations have resulted in a total of 950 jobs with wages amounting to $81 million.
Tourism also saw significant growth; McKinney National Airport facilitated travel for approximately 56,900 visitors who contributed significantly to local spending—a rise of 155 percent in visitor volume and a 235 percent increase in spending since prior assessments. The report stated that without this air traffic volume through TKI, North Texas's tourism demand would be lower.
Mayor George Fuller highlighted the importance of continued investment in TKI: “McKinney National Airport is one of our city’s most powerful assets,” he remarked. “This study highlights just how critical the airport’s growth and development are to McKinney’s prosperity.”
