Residents and visitors in McKinney, Texas, now have a new way to explore the city's Historic Downtown Cultural District. The City of McKinney and McKinney Main Street have introduced a free trolley service that operates on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This service aims to enhance the downtown experience by providing a convenient means of exploring the area while connecting people with the city's historical background.
The trolley follows a fixed route with multiple stops throughout downtown, allowing passengers to hop on or off at any point. A complete loop takes approximately 20 minutes. Importantly, the trolley is ADA-compliant, ensuring accessibility for all riders.
The introduction of this service pays homage to McKinney's past as it connects riders with the old interurban railway system. Interurban electric rail service arrived in McKinney in 1912, offering residents quick transportation options to Dallas and other nearby cities. This development played a crucial role in facilitating commerce and growth within the city.
"We're thrilled to introduce the downtown trolley, a nostalgic nod to McKinney's historic interurban railway that will greatly enhance the charm of our Historic Downtown Cultural District," said Andrew Jones, Director of the Cultural District and McKinney Main Street. "This initiative provides a convenient and enjoyable way for residents and visitors to explore downtown and adds to the unique and vibrant atmosphere that makes our community special."
Funding for this project comes from various sources including sponsorships, hotel tax dollars, McKinney Main Street support, and contributions from the McKinney Community Development Corporation.
Besides serving public transportation needs, the trolley can also be rented for private events or special occasions.
