On January 2nd, President Biden signed into law a bill to rename the Department of Veterans Affairs community-based outpatient clinic in Plano, Texas. The facility will now be known as the "U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson Memorial VA Clinic." This legislation was introduced by Congressman Keith Self in the House and Senator John Cornyn in the Senate.
Congressman Sam Johnson had a distinguished career both in military service and public office. As a retired Colonel and decorated fighter pilot, he displayed courage during his time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, where he endured nearly seven years of captivity, including 42 months in solitary confinement. His military honors include two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal, and two Purple Hearts.
Following his 29-year career with the United States Air Force, Johnson served in the Texas State House of Representatives before being elected to Congress in 1991. He continued his legislative work until retiring in 2019.
"Congressman Johnson truly embodied what it means to be an American hero," said Congressman Keith Self. "I am thankful to Senator Cornyn, House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Bost, and House Majority Leader Scalise for their efforts in getting this legislation signed into law."
Senator Cornyn added: "Sam Johnson was an American hero, a statesman, a loving husband and father, and a good friend... I am happy that our legislation to preserve and honor his extraordinary legacy has been signed into law."
Chairman Bost also expressed admiration for Johnson's contributions: "As a principled legislator... his fight for freedom for individual liberties on behalf of everyday Americans will continue to be felt."
The renaming serves as a tribute to Sam Johnson's life of service and dedication to his country.
