Congressman Keith Self has introduced a House companion bill to Senator Ted Cruz's legislation, aiming to reaffirm the principles that have historically defined the United States Military Academy at West Point. This initiative seeks to ensure that the academy continues to be recognized for its leadership development and national pride.
"On November 5th, 2024, President Trump overwhelmingly won a mandate to restore greatness to America. This mandate includes our military institutions, which have been weakened and neutered by wokeism," said Congressman Keith Self. He emphasized his connection to West Point as a former cadet and highlighted the importance of the phrase "Duty, Honor, Country," as expressed in General Douglas MacArthur's 1962 farewell speech. "Congress should pass this legislation to reaffirm 'Duty, Honor, Country' in the mission statement of the U.S. Military Academy, so these three words can continue to inspire future generations of America's warfighters."
Congressman Self further stated the necessity of advancing this bill: “We must get this bill to President Trump’s desk to reignite USMA’s culture, basing it on meritocracy and the traditional values that define military leadership. Our cadets today are tomorrow’s warfighters and will need lethality, not social justice indoctrination, to survive on the battlefield.”
The significance of "Duty, Honor, Country" dates back to General MacArthur's influential address at West Point in 1962. The phrase remained integral until March 2024 when it was removed from West Point's mission statement.
