Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is abdicating his Constitutional responsibility by politicizing the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Impeachment proceedings have never been, nor should they be decided along party lines. The House of Representatives has impeached 18 active-duty officials, all of which were taken to trial by the Senate. Even Senate Republicans honored their Constitutional duty when taking up House Democrats’ politically charged impeachment of President Trump. There are no other reasons than partiality and hubris to refuse a trial for Secretary Mayorkas.

“A motion to table the articles of impeachment would defy precedents and laws dating back to the founding of our great nation,” Congressman Keith Self said. “The Senate must fulfill its Constitutional duty by holding this trial to establish justice and ensure domestic tranquility for our Republic.”

On February 13, 2024, the House of Representatives impeached Secretary Mayorkas for high crimes and misdemeanors by refusing to comply with laws passed by Congress and breaching the public trust. When it returns on April 10, 2024, the Senate is obligated to begin facilitating this trial.
