State Sen. Angela Paxton (R-McKinney) earlier this year noted she stands behind parents when it comes to what children are being exposed to in public institutions.

At a Texas Public Policy Foundation event held in April in McKinney, Paxton said parents should be taken more into account when it comes to their children.

“There are groups of parents forming, I bet you know of some,” she said. “They’re forming because they want the school boards to be responsive to them. They don’t want to be dismissed,” Paxton said.

Paxton has been endorsed by Moms Action for America which has advocated for a federal Parents’ Bill of Rights.

“As a mother and your Senator, empowering families is a top priority for me. Today, I am honored to have received the endorsement from Moms for America Action, a national movement of mothers who supports parental rights, American values, and Constitutional principles,” Paxton said on Facebook.

Earlier this year, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced his intention to bring forward the Texas Parental Bill of Rights, a bill that would lay out the rights parents in Texas have when it comes to decisions being made in schools.

“Parents will be restored to their rightful place as the preeminent decision-maker for their children,” Abbott said.

These bills have been popping up in states across the country as a way of addressing concerns raised by parents.

In March of this year, Florida Governor Ron Desantis signed the HB1557, Parental Rights in Education bill which “reinforces parents’ fundamental rights to make decisions regarding the upbringing of their children.”

So, what does that mean for Texas parents if a bill is passed in the upcoming legislative session?

According to a document on Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s website the bill would:

1. Amend the Texas Constitution to reinforce that parents are the main decision makers in all matters involving their minor children.

2. Expand parents’ rights to access course curriculum and all other material available to students.

3. Ensure that parent’s concerns with school curriculum or policies are considered quickly and respectfully.

4. Require that schools are not collecting unnecessary personal data about students and that schools are not sharing any student data outside the education system.

5. Ensure that any educational personnel convicted of providing minors with access to pornographic materials lose all their educational public credentials and state licensing.

6. Empower parents by ensuring school districts provide them with a copy of the Texas Parental Bill of Rights.

7. Give parents the option to decide if their child should repeat a course or grade level.
