Led by individual state champion Luke Colton, the Wakeland boys golf team achieved a second-place finish at the UIL 5A Boys State Championships held at Legacy Hills Golf Course in Georgetown. This result marked an improvement from last year when both Colton and Wakeland secured second and third places respectively.

The Wakeland team comprised Luke Colton, Hunter Beasley, Maxton Brown, Jude Robbins, and Tripp Tuthill. They concluded the competition with a two-round total of 586, trailing Smithson Valley by 14 shots but leading Prosper Walnut Grove by three shots.

Sophomore Luke Colton emerged as the individual state champion with a remarkable two-round total of 8-under 136. After leading by one stroke following a first-round score of 66, he maintained his advantage with a second-round score of 70. He finished four strokes ahead of Ryan Griff from Smithson Valley.

“It feels great,” Colton told The Dallas Morning News. “It’s just an honor to be here and play with my teammates, and I know we didn’t get the win but that’s all right. It was a fun time.”

With no seniors on the Wakeland team, there is potential for continued success next year.

Full results of the state championship are available online. The upcoming UIL Girls State Golf Championships will take place on May 6-7, featuring teams such as Centennial and Wakeland in 5A and Panther Creek in 4A.
