Frisco ISD students of voting age can now register to vote on their own campus as the Oct. 7 registration deadline approaches. Eligible high school students have access to voter registration cards in their campus library. Each campus has a deputy voter registrar, usually the principal or their designee, who completes the process as required by the Texas Secretary of State.
Registering students to vote is part of Frisco ISD's efforts to encourage civic engagement. From kindergarten through high school, FISD students learn that voting is a critical part of citizenship through Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
In kindergarten through fifth grade, students use voting for group decision-making. First graders explain and practice voting as a way of making choices and decisions. Second and third graders learn about good citizenship characteristics, including participation in government by educating oneself about issues, respectfully holding public officials accountable, and voting.
Secondary students learn more about laws protecting the right to vote and evaluate the importance of participating in elections among other TEKS. Making it simple for eligible students to register aligns with the District's culture of voting adopted by the Board of Trustees in 2017. This culture encourages maximum participation by District employees and eligible students in elections.
By law, Frisco ISD does not endorse candidates, parties, or measures, and voter registration on campuses is nonpartisan.
A voter registration drive for community members will be hosted by Frisco Area Retired School Personnel and Frisco ISD.
