The Wakeland girls soccer team has secured a place in the state championship following a strong performance in the 5A Division II state semifinal. On Friday night, Wakeland convincingly defeated Grapevine with a 3-0 victory at Buddy Echols Field in Coppell.
The team's overall record stands at 24-0-1. They scored all three goals in the first half of the match. This sets the stage for Wakeland to face Cedar Park, whose current record is 23-2-1. The championship game is scheduled for Friday, April 11, at 11 a.m., taking place at Georgetown ISD's Birkelbach Stadium.
Wakeland's journey through this season has been remarkable, maintaining an unbeaten streak since the 2023 season. The Wolverines aim to win their fifth UIL state title, adding to their previous victories in 2011, 2018, 2022, and the 5A title last year with a record of 26-0-3.
In the semifinal against Grapevine, Morgan Landry opened the scoring just six minutes into the match, converting a rebound from her penalty kick. Additional goals by Audrey Gilbert and Kendi Smith ensured the match outcome was never in doubt. Wakeland's dominance was evident with 17 shots on goal compared to only one from Grapevine, as highlighted by the Dallas Morning News.
Throughout the playoffs, Wakeland has maintained an impressive record, outscoring opponents 19-3.
