Heritage High School senior Keya Kadakia has been named the North Texas Now! Outstanding Student of the Year. This recognition is awarded annually to a University of North Texas second-year student who excels in personal character, academics, leadership, and teamwork.
Keya had initial concerns about the workload when considering UNT’s North Texas Now! program. Despite past struggles with writing projects, she decided to enroll and was rewarded for her dedication.
The program allows Frisco ISD students to earn 42 college credit hours while completing high school coursework. The Class of 2024 saw 27 graduates from this program.
“North Texas Now! has changed me significantly,” said Keya, now nearing graduation. “I’ve learned how to be prepared for my undergraduate experience.”
Her father, Hemal Kadakia, expressed pride in her development both academically and personally. “Beyond the financial savings, watching Keya grow has been incredible,” he said. He noted her increased independence and confidence.
Keya also shared that the program is ideal for those seeking challenges and memorable experiences with peers. After graduation, she plans to pursue public health or biomedical engineering on a pre-med track.
Reedy High School senior Presley Sockwell was named runner-up for the award. She plans to attend Oklahoma State University's honors college, studying communication sciences and disorders with aspirations of earning a master’s in speech language pathology.
The application period for North Texas Now! remains open until February 14, 2025.
