A student from Pearson Middle School has achieved a significant accolade by winning the 2025 Youth Art Month flag contest. Eighth grader Eliana Shim emerged as both the middle school division and overall winner in this competition organized by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA). The contest also awards winners in elementary and high school divisions.
Eliana's artwork was selected from entries across Texas and will be showcased alongside flags from other states at the National Art Education Association conference in March. Her work will be part of the NAEA flag ceremony.
"We are extremely proud of Eliana for this honor," stated Pete Hazzard, managing director of fine arts. "What a joy it is to see great work, produced by great students, led by great teachers, recognized in this way!"
Kristen Bourdier, who teaches Art 2 at Pearson, expressed her admiration for Eliana's talent. "I couldn’t be prouder of Eliana," Bourdier remarked. "Everything she makes is so high quality and high level. I feel lucky to know her. She’s going to do great things, and I’ll be able to say, ‘I knew her when.’"
TAEA marks Youth Art Month with various events such as Big Art Day competitions and displays, including a student exhibit at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.
