The Wakeland girls soccer team finished their season as the state runner-up after losing to Cedar Park, 3-1, in the 5A Division II championship held at Birkelbach Stadium in Georgetown. This defeat ended Wakeland's impressive two-year unbeaten streak, which dated back to the 2023 playoffs. Despite the loss, the Wolverines maintain a remarkable record, completing the season 25-1-1.
Wakeland's coach, Jimmie Lankford, expressed mixed emotions after the game. "It hurts right now," Lankford said, "but we had an incredible two-year run. It just wasn't meant to be today." The Wolverines, who were vying for their fifth state title, faced an early setback as Cedar Park scored twice within the first 10 minutes and boasted a 3-0 lead by halftime. Although the Wolverines created scoring opportunities in the second half, they only managed to find the net once through Lily McCalmont's goal in the final minutes.
Cedar Park played with determination, despite having lost to Wakeland earlier in the season. The newly crowned state champions capitalized on their opportunities, scoring three times on seven shots, compared to Wakeland's 13 attempts on goal. "We’re always going to be somebody’s best game," Lankford noted. "They’re going to attack us because we’re at the top of the mountain."
Despite the loss, Wakeland remains a formidable force in Texas high school soccer, with a rich history of state titles, including victories in 2011, 2018, 2022, and last year's undefeated championship run. Looking ahead, Lankford emphasized the team's ambition for the next season: "The expectation is to be back here."
